cliff’s “practically-annual” visit to texas

my cousin (cliff) came to texas for a weekend 2 months ago. i should blog these under “throwback thursdays” since i blog so late (you can view more recent photos on my instagram: @sierralei and then read about my experiences 2 months later, haha).

it was my brother’s birthday weekend, which also fell on restaurant week (as usual). cliff usually visits without me being able to plan ahead and take days off from work, but in this case, i managed to plan accordingly. we had a pretty jam-packed weekend.

on friday, my brother and i picked up cliff at midnight and went to IHOP for a late grubbing session. we probably slept at 3-5 a.m. and woke up in the afternoon to take my brother out for a birthday lunch at a sushi buffet restaurant, japan house. cliff had to work for a few hours during the day and at night (my brother had to work on his birthday), a small group of us went to our first restaurant week spot, THE MERCURY. wonderful restaurant in dallas, by the way. after dinner, we met up with more friends and bar-hopped. i was VERY glad that cliff got to meet my close friends. he had been visiting dallas since 9 years ago but i was never able to introduce him to a lot of my friends. friday was just an absolute blast.

saturday was pretty fun. cliff, clint, and i woke up early to head out to waco for lunch. my brother was determined to take us to vitek’s for their gut pak (yes, there will be photos), which blew his mind. we drove over 2 hours for lunch, yes. hey, we will go where there is good food! on the drive, my cousin educated me on the navigation app called WAZE. if you don’t have it, get it. moving along. we got to vitek’s and i thought it was a VERY COOL place. it was definitely worth the drive. after lunch, we went to the dr. pepper museum and that was fun. it was a first for all of us so it was pretty exciting. we took some superfun pictures there. we had to drive back to dallas because we had our second restaurant for restaurant week later that night at BIJOUX. oh, bijoux……oh, bijoux. if any of you live in dallas and have not gone to this restaurant, YOU MUST GO. in fact, i think i will make an entirely separate blog on just this restaurant, it was that amazing. saturday was such a great day.

sunday was still packed with fun! we took cliff to a rangers game! and oh, boy, did the weather turn up-it was nice and cool the past 2 days and then it turned into a furnace on sunday. cliff is an island boy and former marine-i think 70 degrees makes him sweat. poor thing. we tailgated with raising cane’s and beer before the game, which was fun since i have never tailgated before. after the game, we had to go straight home to get ready for dinner with cliff’s former marine friend. we had dinner at a korean bbq restaurant (ah-mazing korean food) with cliff’s friend and his beautiful girlfriend. i can’t believe i had never known of this korean restaurant in carrollton, it was so good! we had yogurt after dinner and it was amazing.

and then cliff left at about 5 a.m. on monday morning. and all the fun was over. but it was such a FUN FUN FUN WEEKEND. it was such a fun weekend, it was ridiculous. i took hundreds and hundreds of photos but there were some that just stood out over the others.

here are the fun photos from cliff’s recent visit. enjoy.

happy terrific two

today is my 2 year anniversary of blogging.

first of all, i want to say thank you for reading my blog. and all of its randomness.

i have enjoyed meeting as many of you as i can (via blog comments, emails, facebook, instagram, etc…). i have enjoyed reading your blogs. i have enjoyed trying your recipes and experiencing your life through your stories. i have enjoyed reading about ingredients i don’t even like, and have not “enjoyed” reading about your dating woes and disasters. but you are all fantastic writers, and that’s what keeps me reading.

there’s nothing sophisticated or themed about my blog. it’s just a bunch of random experiences that i want to share.

and with that said, stay tuned for more random experiences that i will still be sharing!

may you all have a fantastic week. =)

i bumped into a mustache necklace at forever 21 one day. dang that store, they have so many impulse buys there! but i do love my mustache necklace. i'm not into the mustache craze by any means, but i had to have that necklace. and i even wear it to work.

my nephew will love taking photos when he grows up. i am to blame. when we are sitting around, we will take a thousand pictures of ourselves...and this is one of a series of photos taken while we were waiting for my sister to finally come out of hobby lobby. my nephew has the best faces, i could make an entire blog post on all my favorites.

i’m back.

at 6:30 a.m. on november 13, 2012 i left saipan and came back to texas.

i haven’t blogged in 2 months and i wish i had because SO MANY things have happened…like packing back up and moving halfway around the world all over again.

i had planned on being back home for about a year or two, but plans change and things change, so i was brought back to texas. that is pretty much it in a nutshell for anyone who is wondering. if i were to explain, in detail, everything that happened while i was back home, that would be a long blog on it’s own…but i have 2 months worth of stories to cover, so i’d rather move forward.

i miss saipan, but i have missed texas during the 3 months that i had been gone. it felt like going from 200 mph to 30 mph while i was back home, and then when i got back to dallas, it felt like everything went right up to 500 mph because i had arrived during the holiday season and right before thanksgiving. i slid right back into my job of 6 years at papyrus, which i was thankful for. it always feels great to know that you are welcome back. i was moved to northpark center in dallas and it was such a fun-filled holiday season at that mall. the gingerbread competition was held in the hallway right outside our store and i had actually documented the entire thing (duh!). the gingerbread community competition is an annual event at northpark center. about 20 architects and designers and companies get their teams together to form their assigned piece (coffee house, hospital, stadium, etc…) for the gingerbread community. they have a time frame in which they must complete their pieces (like FOOD NETWORK CHALLENGE!) and place them on the display table. the gingerbread community is then up for display for about a week before each piece is auctioned off by the end of the week. here are a few pics i took:

i could have made gingertown dallas 2012 pictures an entire blog on its own since i took so many pics but there are a handful that y’all will enjoy.

during the holidays, another great sight to see was vitruvian park.

that place is truly magical during the holidays. every single tree is lit in one solid color. i just love visually popping sceneries.

the highlight of the holiday season was the launch of my gift wrap station at northpark center. located in the corner of the luxury hallway near nordstrom and taking over the gingertown dallas 2012 spot, my gift wrap station was constructed…

the wrap station was incredibly busy that we didn’t get to take pictures of it. i was working up to 12 hours a day, gift wrapping. it was complete madness, i tell ya. but it was loads of fun. it really was. and it started me fondness for foot products as well! hahahaha! i would come home with the most painful aches in my feet…i started soaking in eucalyptus epsom salts and i loved it. i recently hit up the body shop’s flash sale a few days ago. they had 50% off all their skincare and i bought a few of their foot products. they’ve been wonderful and they will come in handy when my gift wrap station gets set back up for valentine’s! it will be up from february 1-14. i am super stoked. and i will take more pictures. =)

there are tons of other pictures i would like to share, but i’m sure i will take equally great ones moving forward into the year.

my birthday is exactly a week from now and it’s going to be a fun-filled weekend. i will be starting my search for a birthday dress this week. i’ve already bought the shoes from bakers because they have a liquidation sale going on.

did any of y’all make a new year’s resolution for 2013?

this was my NYE face.

hope you all have a great evening!

august 28. one of my favorite drinks on island.

august 28. my mom fried this fish for me for dinner, served with breadfruit. i totally threw it up half an hour later. i felt so bad. it was good but i guess my stomach was still being picky from all the nerves i had before leaving texas. i had trouble eating back then…

august 30. while on saipan, i would never suggest getting a steak for dinner. i stick to what the location is known for, and that’s raw fish and island food. i hope that prime rib i had the night before i left texas is enough to hold me over for a year…

state fair of texas part 2

let me start off with my shoe inspiration real quick.

this picture was taken OF ME by my amazing friend, cory.

he has taken a few pictures of me shooting pool, and i do love these boots.

i just want to own 100 pairs of boots…

=)

thank you, cory!! ❤

now, onto the state fair of texas part 2. today, i went with my sister and my little man (my nephew). the weather was about 60ish degrees, which is just too cold for me…but it warmed up later in the day. we rode the dart there and brought our canned goods to get our $2 admissions because it was the wednesday special deal. i wanted to eat before we went to the fair but my sister insisted that we eat everything on the fair grounds instead of my jack in the box breakfast that i kept whining that i didn’t get to have. when we got to the fair, we walked by a huge sign that said “ultimate fried burger” and i was sold. of course i base everything on what pictures of food look like…but fried pickles, fried onions, and fried cheese in a burger? yes, please. my sister’s 2 main things are a funnel cake and a turkey leg, so we got the funnel cake first. my nephew had to have a corn dog. that was lunch.

i didn’t know what to expect at the state fair today. the last time my sister went to the fair (maybe 5 years ago!?), we were there for only 2 hours because she fell sick. last year, i took my nephew to the fair with a bunch of friends and we stayed there ALL DAY. we’ve never been to the fair together…but it was fun!…aside from the fact that my nephew got so hyper that he was getting on our nerves. “i want to ride the big round thing!” which was the ferris wheel that he didn’t get to ride on. “i want cotton candy!” which we did give him. “I WANT SODA!” which we gave him very little of to get him to quiet down and get out of our hair. “i want to go home!” which we eventually ended up doing around 5 p.m…

my only goal was to take fun pictures. the last time i went to the fair with penny, we walked around and walked into every exhibit and every building and walked through the entire fair grounds….this time around, we saw the bird show, saw as many animals as we could, and took a ton of fun pictures. we took pictures with anything from the banana trees (of course, being that we’re island girls) to the fountains to the huge….huge…elephant we walked by….my nephew is quite the model. he just expects to be in every picture. so you will be seeing a lot of him…..

right….

about…….

now.

there you have it.

here is my 70+ picture blog of our fun-filled day. i thought the pictures were great. i didn’t edit any of them, which i loved about them even more. i think i got my fix of this year’s state fair. this year was the best year i’ve visited the fair because i got to experience it the most out of both visits than i have in the previous years combined. i got to experience the fair with an adult during the first visit and with a child in the second visit, so it was fun. i didn’t get to eat another buffalo chicken in a flapjack but i was fine with that. i was glad we bumped into the fried okra booth (my sister and i LOVE fried okra) and my sister ended up getting her turkey leg before we left, so she was a happy camper.

cheers to the 125th anniversary of THE STATE FAIR OF TEXAS!

xoxo
